Activated Charcoal for Healing and Cleansing
Activated charcoal, also known as activated carbon, is one of the newest beauty trends to hit the market this year. However, it’s been around for centuries and commonly used as a healing agent for the skin. Ancient Egyptians and American Indians commonly used it to treat skin conditions.
Activated charcoal is similar to regular charcoal except that it is treated with gas to allow the charcoal to expand and become porous. The porous texture allows for toxins from skin to be drawn out just like a magnet. It’s a common agent in water filters in order to purify water. It’s also used in emergency medical situations where poisons are digested, a mixture of activated charcoal is usually given as soon as possible to soak up the toxins before the body can process the toxins. It’s safe for most adults in small quantities taken in short term situations, but always check with your doctor before using for medicinal purposes.
Benefits of Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal has several benefits for the skin including soaking up toxins and impurities on and within the skin layers. It can even draw out poison from a fresh bee sting, spider bite or poison ivy. It actively removes the cause of the irritant and always the skin to begin healing. To do so, mix one part activate charcoal powder with one part cornstarch and water into paste and apply the affected skin. Activated charcoal is also good at cleansing the skin especially for those with acne as it will absorb the oil, dirt and even make-up off of the skin. A great face mask can be made with activated charcoal powder by mixing it with aloe Vera, tea tree oil, and water to make a mask for the face.
Be aware that the mixture will be black in appearance may stain clothes and counter tops if your not careful when using it. Another caution for activated charcoal is that there are not many published studies on the long term affect of using activated charcoal. So it may be best to use this as needed rather than with your daily routine.
