Boost Immune & Reduce Stress with Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate Nostril Breathing, also known as Nadi Sodhan Pranayam, is a super simple and powerful technique to create a deep sense of well-being and harmony on the physical, mental, and emotional levels. And that’s exactly what each of us needs right now with the onset of the Coronavirus. Breath exercises are integrating and grounding, while this particular exercise, Alternate Nostril Breathing also balances the right and left hemispheres of the brain. In fact, the energy of the nervous system is directly proportional to one’s breathing.

Ancient yogic texts explain that the nostril on the right is our sun nostril and it controls our energy level. The benefits brought forth from our right nostril is warming, vigor, concentration, alertness, action orientated, and will power.

On the other side, our left nostril is our lunar nostril and it controls our emotions. The benefits of performing this breathing technique from the left nostril can bring a cleansing energy, calmness, empathy and positive sensitivity.

So if you find yourself tired, breathing long and deep through the right nostril will give you added energy while breathing through the left nostril will bring calmness.

When performing the Alternate Nostril Breathing the long deep breaths the calm, sooth and energize the entire nervous system. All it takes is just 3 to 5 minutes, no more no less and it can be repeated periodically throughout the day. It’s wonderful to add into your morning and evening routines.

The ancient yogis taught that if you can learn to regulate the way you breathe, you can gain greater control over your mind. One of the many yogi goals of breathing techniques associated with meditation.

Alternate Nostril Breathing to boost your immune and reduce stress.

Benefits of Alternate Nostril Breathing:

1. Improve respiratory health

When practicing this technique we use deep, slow breathing and access the full capacity of the lungs. The pulse rate and respiratory rate have been shown to decrease significantly following just a few weeks of daily Alternate Nostril Breathing.

2. Improve cardiovascular health & Revitalize the Body

The slow breathing technique can reduce the systolic and diastolic blood pressure immediately after one session. This is a result of triggering the parasympathetic nervous system, causing the blood vessels to relax and widen.

3. Reduce stress and anxiety & Sooth the Nerves

Balancing the activity between your left and right nostrils brings your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems into equilibrium. And it also helps alleviate overactive stress response.

4. Reduce worry and rumination

By keeping the attention on the breath, we take a break from the mind and thinking on thoughts which have great concerns. Thus, it is helpful in reducing simply repetitively going over a thought or a problem.

5.  Enhanced Mental Function

Alternate nostril breathing helps sharpen your concentration and mental clarity even when you feel your mind is sluggish.

How to Perform Alternate Nostril Breathing:

  • Posture: Sit with a straight spine. You may be in Easy Pose or on a chair, wherever you can keep your spine straight and be comfortable.
  • Mudra and Breath: Using the thumb and index fingers of the right hand, make a “U” of the two fingers, using the thumb to close off the right nostril and the index finger to close off the left nostril. The breath is always relaxed, deep and full.
  • Close the left nostril, inhale deeply through the right nostril. At the end of the inhale, close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril.
  • Now inhale through the left nostril fully and deeply, then close the left nostril and exhale through the right one.
  • Again, inhale through the right nostril and continue alternate nostril breathing. The breath must be complete and full on both the inhalation and exhalation cycles.
  • Time: Continue for 3 – 5 minutes.
  • Optional Mantra: Inhale Sat. Exhale Naam. Chanting the mantra, Sat Nam, awakens your soul and gives you your destiny. Sat means Truth or the reality of one’s existence. Nam means name or identity. It instantly attunes us to our highest self. Sat Nam affirms that Truth is our Identity. Sat Nam is a bij mantra, a seed sound. Within the seed is all the knowledge of the fully grown tree. Bij mantras are sounds that rearrange the habit patterns of the subconscious mind.

To End: Inhale deeply, hold the breath a few seconds, lower the hand, and exhale.

Try incorporating Alternate Nostril Breathing into your morning and evening routines for the long term benefits associated with your mental, emotional, and wellness. Sat Nam!

Boost Your Immune System and Reduce Stress: Breath of Fire

The Corona Virus has certainly put a huge strain on humanity. So it’s time we all start practicing self care in order to beat the odds of this silent enemy. There are several ways you can boost an immune system but the simplest, easiest and cheapest way is to simply modify your breathing through the yoga breathing techniques.

Breath of Fire is not for everyone, so please consult a physician for any questions or concerns in regards to incorporating this techniques into your daily routine. And if anyone develops any negatives reactions, stop immediately and consult a physician. To read our full disclosure, click here.

One yoga breathing technique to boost the immune system and reduce stress is called Breath of Fire or Agni Pran (yoga terminology).

Breath of Fire

Breath of Fire (Agni Pran)

Breath of Fire is one of the foundational breath techniques used in the practice of Kundalini Yoga. It accompanies many postures, and has numerous beneficial effects. It is important to master this breath so that it is done accurately and becomes automatic. Breath of Fire is rapid, rhythmic, and continuous. It is equal on the inhale and the exhale, with no pause between them (approximately 2-3 cycles per second). It is always practiced through the nostrils with the mouth closed, unless stated otherwise.

Breath of Fire is powered from the navel point and solar plexus. To exhale, the air is expelled powerfully through the nose, by pressing the navel point and solar plexus back toward the spine. This feels automatic if you contract the diaphragm rapidly. To inhale, the upper abdominal muscles relax, the diaphragm extends down, and the breath seems to come in as part of relaxation rather than through effort. The chest stays relaxed and slightly lifted throughout the breathing cycle. When done correctly, there should be no rigidity of hands, feet, face, or abdomen.

Begin practicing Breath of Fire for a duration of I-3 minutes. You can work your way up to 10 minutes for added benefits. If you find that the breath creates an initial dizziness or giddiness, stop immediately. If you find this helpful, you can incorporate this into your morning and evening routines.

Some tingling, traveling sensations and light-headedness are completely normal as your body adjusts to the new breath and new stimulation of the nerves. Concentrating at the brow point may help relieve these sensations. Sometimes these symptoms are the result of toxins and other chemicals released by the breath technique. The symptoms may be relieved by drinking lots of water and changing to a light diet. Also don’t try this on a full stomach, it’s best to incorporate before you eat a meal.

The Many Benefits of Breath of Fire:

  • Releases toxins and deposits from the lungs, mucous linings, blood vessels, and other cells.
  • Expands the lung capacity and increases vital strength.
  • Strengthens the nervous system to resist stress.
  • Repairs the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
  • Strengthens the navel chakra.
  • Increases physical endurance and prepares you to act effectively.
  • Adjusts the subtle psycho-electromagnetic field of the aura so that the blood becomes energized.
  • Reduces addictive impulses for drugs, smoking, and bad foods.
  • Increases oxygen delivery to the brain, facilitating a focused, intelligent, and neutral state of mind.
  • Boosts the immune system and may help prevent many diseases.
  • Promotes synchronization of the biorhythms of the body’s systems.

Breath of Fire is not hyperventilation, nor is it Bellows Breath (see below). There are restrictions for doing Breath of Fire while pregnant and menstruating.

Beginning a Practice of Breath of Fire

  • Sit straight and place the hands in Prayer Pose.
  • Close the eyelids 9/10ths. Roll the eyes up and concentrate at the Brow Point or the third eye.
  • Begin Breath of Fire for I-3 minutes.
  • Then inhale and hold for 10seconds.
  • Relax. Stay still and place the hands on the knees in Gyan Mudra, palms up to welcome renewal energy.
  • Watch the natural flow of the breath and the constant stream of internal and external sensations. Continue for 3 minutes.
  • Inhale deeply, exhale.
  • Repeat this combination 3-5 times.

Common mistakes in doing Breath of Fire

  • Paradoxical breathing: Many people learn to breathe backwards – they inhale by pulling the belly in, thus making the space for the breath less rather than more. People who are often anxious or smoke frequently tend to have this pattern. It can be easily changed by placing one hand on the chest and one on the belly and doing Breath of Fire slowly with total awareness.
  • Trying to breathe by an exaggerated pumping of the belly. Breath of Fire is not the deep-bellows cleansing breath that pumps the stomach with complete exhales and inhales. Breath of Fire comes from higher up near the solar plexus.
  • A loss of attention to the balanced ratio of the inhale and exhale. One way to get this right is to do it wrong first. Try to inhale much more than you exhale with each breath cycle at l-2 times per second. Within 30 seconds you can sense the over-stimulated jumpiness and imbalance of the breathing. Then switch to a much greater exhale than inhale at the same pace. Almost immediately you will sense a loss of strength, lethargy, distraction, or depression. Now make the breath exactly equal on the inhale and exhale. Listen to the sound of the breath and create a steady rhythm.

Breath of Fire is a wonderful yoga breathing technique to boost the immune system and reduce stress, try incorporating this in your morning and evening routines or when you just need a pick me up. Breath of Fire helps me when I need to refocus and gain composure especially in times of stress.

Being Gentle with Sensitive Skin

The Exfoliation Healing Process

I’m a firm believer in exfoliation and often do more than I should at times. Because I’m focused on maintaining a youthful glow and doing everything to slow down the aging process, it’s best to take a step back and understand the exfoliation healing process so you don’t over initiate your skin.

For example, it takes 14 days for your skin to maintain its new found smoothness after a microdermabrasion treatment (from a study in Skin Research and Technology). I do weekly microdermabrasion OR an acidic skin peel to maintain my facial appearance’s soft smooth glow. But if you are someone in your early 20’s or 30’s, your skin heals and turns over faster so weekly may not be appropriate for your skin. If you find your skin is too tight, feeling more like a sunburn than refreshing – it maybe your over exfoliating.

So back to the basics: Skin consists of three layers of tissues: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the outer thin layer of the skin. It consists mainly of dead cells and the main reason why exfoliation is necessary. The dead cells are replaced by new cells produced in the lower portion of the epidermis, which move upward to the outside of the skin.

This cycle of cell production and replacement takes longer as we age. On average, It takes about 28-45 days for someone in their 30’s. And slows to about 45-60 days in our 40’s and 50’s. And slows further to about 60-90 days in our 50’s and 60’s.

The dead cells accumulate on the surface of skin causing sagging and collapse of structure or what we see as lines, wrinkles, and deeper folds. And if you don’t maintain a proper exfoliation process, bacteria can become trapped causing breakouts. Or even worse is the possibility of discolored and irregular cells can also become trapped causing a more serious skin condition.

The exfoliation healing process is specific to each individual, but there are numerous ways to exfoliate so mixing and match different treatments can target in on what is best for your individual skin needs and preferences. In addition to my weekly microdermabrasion or acidic skin peels, I use a 10% glycolic acid peel at night which also helps control acne breakout. And of course I use a rotating cleansing brush twice and day to help with the light exfoliations and allows for my serums and lotions to adhere to the skin.

The exfoliation healing process is best when you are over compensating on the after affects, so try different methods to ensure your anti-aging process is efficient and effective!

Beautiful Skin in 2 Weeks with the Keto Diet

Beautiful Skin in 2 weeks with the Keto Diet

The fad of the Keto Diet is still going strong and the benefits are more than just loosing weigth, it actually improves your skin’s texture, glow and firmness.  If you follow the diet and it’s strict ingredients, then you can see for yourself these improvements within just a few weeks.  Before we continue, let’s outline what the Keto Diet is all about and then outline how it improves the skin.

The Ancients Indigenous people ate mostly a Keto diet.  The men hunted for their foods, while the women processed the farming foods for their meals.  Wheat of course was available, but usually harder to process into how our current society’s bleached white flour that is processed.  In fact, today’s flour is turned into sugar immediately upon consumption.  That was always so with the ancients.

The Break Down of Ketosis

Essentially, the Ketogenic Diet, or aka Keto Diet, is based on how and what you eat in order to put the body into a process called ketosis which produces ketones for energy.  Ketosis is a natural process the body initiates when there aren’t enough carbs, so it uses fat for energy instead.  In this state ketones are produced from the breakdown of fats in the liver.  The body becomes very efficient and effective at burning fat.  The diet was created in the 1940s to help reduce seizures in epileptic patients.  Over time people began to adapt it for weight loss and other health-related lifestyle changes.

The Keto Diet requires 65-70% fats, 25-30% protein, and 5% carbs.  Thus by limiting the carbohydrates,  fat becomes the primary source of energy for the body.  As if Carbs are not burned immediately when eaten, your body will produce  insulin  will store them as body fat.  This diet requires less than 20 grams of carbs per day.

Traditional foods include all meats, fish, eggs various green vegetables, oils such as avocado or coconut, nuts, plain greek yogurt and cheeses.  Usually two-four weeks will get you the results of loosing weight, but also clearing your system of toxins helping resolve or improving upon a multitude of conditions.  Avoid foods fried in hydrogenated oil, all soy products, rice, bread, alcohol, starchy vegetables  and anything containing carbs or sugars.  Vegetables contain some carbs and that’s why there is an allowance for some carbs, for those they can be limited amounts which include tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, and cauliflower.  Very few fruits are included, only a small portions of berries can be eaten on the diet.

It might seem counterintuitive to eat more fat in order to lose  fat, but its all about shifting the way that the body metabolizes food for energy.  It may also seem like acne would increase when eating higher amounts of fat, but in theory the liver is processing

The Keto Diet can help manage breakouts and improve your Skin

When your body enters ketosis, your body is uses only slow-burning fats rather than fast-burning sugars which helps with keeping insulin levels low and consistent. The Keto Diet also lowers the body’s inflammation through the liver detoxification support from all the quality amino acids, minerals and fiber from cruciferous vegetables.  Furthermore, The antioxidants in the Keto Diet helps rid the body of free radicals and protects the skin from sun damage that can accelerate aging.

However BEWARE that if you go back to eating carbs, the weight and complexion issues will come immediately back!  So it’s best to phase off the diet to help the body transition well.

Goddess Nectar with Apples and Honey

Goddess Nectar with Apples and Honey

Treating our skin with amazing all natural organic foods is what I like to call Goddess Nectar.  And two super foods that have a significant historical records from folklore, legends, stone images on carved tablets, tomb offerings, and overwhelming numbers of references from Hebrew Bible scriptures are Honey and the Apple.  Enjoying Honey and Apple reminds us of our historic connection with the ancient ancestors.

The Ancient world of Honey

Honey was found in the ancient tombs of Pyramids, including the famous grave of Tutankhamon approximately 3,000 years ago and still considered perfectly edible. The secret behind honey’s eternal shelf life is a range of factors: Hydrogen peroxide, acidity and lack of water work together to make this sticky substance last forever.  The ancient Egyptians used honey for a multitude of purposes including as a sweetener, a gift for the gods and an ingredient in embalming fluid.

However the oldest honey was discovered in ancient Georgia in the Borjomi Region. The archeologists found two potteries with the human remains in the mounds.  Georgian Archeologists think the Georgian honey is two thousands years older than the Egyptian honey found in Tutankhamon’s tomb.  As in ancient Egypt, ancient Georgia also prepared honey for people’s journeys into the afterlife.  Including more than one type of honey such as linden, berry, and a meadow-flower variety.

According to the researches, the Georgian honey dates 5500 years, while Egyptian dates just 3000-3500 years. According to the scientists the human remains, that were found in the grave, was the first be-master woman. There was found different species of honey in the grave. It gives the terms that Georgia was declared as ‘The Land of Honey.’

Honey Benefits on the Skin

Honey is just an amazing element with several benefits to the skin. It not only moisturizes skin but it’s also an antioxidant and anti-fungal. If you have issues with Acne, honey will assist with acne prevention. It also enables the pores to open for proper cleansing. Honey has specific enzymes of which the skin will absorb. Honey offers strong antibacterial and antimicrobial benefits as a natural antioxidant to aid in healing skin abrasions. Honey can also sooth the skin to counteract any irritation.

The bees swarm their environment and collect the sugar-rich nectar of a variety of flowers. That’s why it’s highly encouraged to treat yourself with local honey so you are in contact with these varieties and help lower any possibilities of affecting allergies.  Nutritionally, 1 tablespoon of honey, approximately 21 grams, contains 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar, including fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose.  And it contains virtually no fiber, fat or protein.  Honey is made up of bioactive plant compounds and antioxidants. Darker types tend to be even higher in these compounds than lighter types.

High-quality honey contains many important antioxidants to help with several health factors. These includes phenols, enzymes and compounds like flavonoids and organic acids.  The benefits include lowers heart disease by improving the bad for you cholesterol.  Through it’s assistance with atherosclerosis, which is the fatty buildup in the arteries that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.  Interestingly, several studies have shown that honey reduce the LDL “bad” cholesterol, while significantly raising HDL “good” cholesterol.

Honey also helps those concerned with elevated blood triglycerides, which is another risk factor of heart disease.  Triglyceride levels tend to increase on a diet that is high in sugar and refined carbs which is why honey is often referred to replace sugar in recipes.  In fact, studies have linked regular honey consumption with 11-19% lower triglyceride levels, especially when it is used to replace sugar.

Honey may also help the arteries as the heart dilates or pumps by increasing blood flow to the heart. Plus honey may also help prevent the formation of blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Studies also show honey as an effective alternative for respiratory conditions where over the counter or prescriptions are not utilized.

The Ancient world of the Apple

Going back to the ancient days of Egypt and Persia, archeologists uncovered petrified remains of apple slices that were found in a saucer of an ancient Mesopotamian tomb of a royalty burial site dating back to 2500 BC in southern Iran.

We see this amazing fruit of paradise recurs in the history of many other ancient civilizations.  Historical instances on the existence of apple trees are documented from folklore, legends, stone images on carved tablets, petrified slices of apples on plates for tomb offerings, and overwhelming numbers of references from Hebrew Bible scriptures.   One of the earliest archeological evidences of apple tree fruit comes from the remains of excavations from Jericho, Jordan, that has been dated 6500 BC by radiochemical analysis of carbon atoms.

The interest shown in apples by the Greek and Roman philosophers, poets, historians, and literary masters was even extended to Renaissance painters, royal chefs to the Tsars of Russia and too many other references to mention.

In ancient times apples were considered so special that individuals would use a sharp utensil or their nails to hand-carve their personal hopes and prayers into the apple skins before they were eaten. And the Zohar, a 13th-century Jewish mystical text, states that beauty – represented by God – “diffuses itself in the world as an apple.”

Benefits of Apples on the Skin

Apples may mitigate the effects of asthma, brain health, bone health, pulmonary function while promoting anti-cholesterol, blood oxygenation, red blood cell count, proper digestion and even weight loss. Apples are high in fiber and Vitamin C, low in calories, have only a trace of sodium, and no fat or cholesterol. They are high in minerals and polyphenols, which function as antioxidants.  Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.

Goddess Nectar with Apples and Honey

Combining Apples with Honey is just a special treat and should be taken on an empty stomach. If you treat yourself to desert, wait about 30 minutes before indulging as it can disrupt the digestion if eating high protein meals.

Be sure to seek out local organic apples with the brightest red version you can find.  Also seek out the same for your honey, raw organic and local.  Ensuring organic means that less toxins would be infused in your nectar.   Also be sure to wash your apples throughly to ensure any environment elements are removed before consuming.

Simply slice the organic local apple into small slices and drizzle with local organic raw honey. Serve at room temperature or slightly warmed for a delicious treat.  If you are serving for a group and want the apple slices not to brown, squeeze lemon juice on them to retain the color and enhance the flavor.

And most importably, enjoy!

Get your skin’s PH level back to Normal

Get your skin’s PH level back to Normal

Your skin can easily tilt off its normal pH level, certain products, foods, environmental elements, sleep and stress are just a few to produce wrinkles, inflammation, rashes, sensitivity, or acne.  The science behind it is simple, pH stands for “potential hydrogen” and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance. The range is from the most acidic or 0  to the most alkaline or 14.

Your body’s overall pH level is about 7, so scientists consider the body to be basic. However, your skin’s pH is slightly lower at a level of about 5.5. This means that your skin is slightly acidic. Common soaps and cosmetics are closer to 8-10 PH, which is alkaline.

Get your Skin ph Level back to Normal

The skin’s barrier, which is known as the acid mantle, is responsible for keeping in lipids and moisture while blocking germs, pollution, toxins, and bacteria.  If the acid mantle should becomes too alkaline, skin becomes dry and sensitive causing extreme sensitivities like inflammation, rashes or even eczema.  On the other hand if skin becomes acidic, the skin twill lead to breakouts.

Ensuring the skin’s barrier function is working properly, regular balancing can be necessary especially as we age.  Every decade of life our skin becomes more alkaline, resulting in a variety of undesirable changes and skin disorders ranging from wrinkles to pigmentation and even acne.

Alkaline conditions within the skin harness acne causing bacteria and as alkalinity increases with age, a complexion previously unmarred by breakouts might experience problems later in life.  Monthly alpha-hydroxy-acid-based facials can boost your overall skin texture, pump up cell turnover, and keep the acid mantle in check. Use a low-strength salicylic acid like 12% or higher for taking care of minor wrinkles at 20%.

If you are unsure of what would work best for your skin, then start with the lower percentages and work higher.  Two great ways is with honey mask and an apple cider vinegar toner.  Start including these into your skin routine every few days to keep your skin’s ph level normal.

Get your skin’s PH level back to Normal with Honey

Honey is known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, and it is a humectant—meaning it attracts water and retains it in the skin, keeping the skin smooth and protecting it from dryness and premature wrinkles. It’s also a great source of antioxidants to protect your skin from harsh UV rays. So eating honey and using it on your skin as a wash or a masque is a great way to support your glow and keep your skin pH balanced! Remember, using raw, organic honey is important—processing honey removes all the beautiful phytonutrients.

Luxurious Lavender Bath Bomb Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Epsom Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Lavender Essential Oil (usually around 30-40 drops)
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 4 ounces corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons of cold pressed carrier oil (Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Rose Hip Oil, Olive Oil or Grape Oil)

Luxurious Lavender Bath Bomb Tools:

  • Large non-metal bowl
  • Small non-metal bowl
  • Gloves if you have super sensitive skin
  • Spray Bottle (non BPA)
  • Bath Molds to shape your ball (or just use your hands)

Luxurious Lavender Bath Bomb Directions:

  1. Combine all dry ingredients into the large non-metal bowl and mix together well (baking soda, salt, citric acid, and cornstarch).
  2. In a small non-metal bowl, combine the oil, witch hazel and vanilla extract and stir well. Add the essential Lavender oils one drop at a time.
  3. Add all the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients large bowl in small drops at a time. Mix well with hands (wear gloves if you have sensitive skin).
  4. Mixture should hold together when squeezed without crumbling. If you do not have this consistency, use a spray bottle to incorporate more water into the mixture.
  5. Quickly push mixture into molds, greased muffin tins or any other greased container. Press in firmly and leave at least 24 hours (48 is better) or until hardened. It will expand some and this is normal. You can push it down into the mold several times while it is drying to keep it from expanding to much. Using the metal molds will create a stronger and more effective final bath bomb.
  6. Once the mold is dry, remove and store in air tight container or bag. The bath bomb will be fresh for up to 14 days.

Luxurious Lavender Bath Bomb Application:

  1. Fill your bath with warm water
  2. Once you are ready drop the Luxurious Lavender Bath Bomb into the bath water
  3. Allow the fizziness to bubble up
  4. Get in and relax for at least 20 minutes before proceeding with any soaps or shampoos.
  5. Remember this is an honored gift and to allow yourself to enjoy and reap every minute of it.  Think of how the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Turks, and Greeks utilized baths as sacred rituals that only the elite could perform.  And yes you are worth it.
  6. After the bath, rinse your tub as the oils may leave residue.
